Allan Roy's father was Allan Malcolm Howden and his mother was Violet Evelyn Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Frederick George Howden and Mary Eliza Flowers; his maternal grandparents were  Bertram Frederick Smith and  Violet Amy Slocombe.  He is the fourth of five children.  He has two brothers and two sisters, named Ivan, Terence David, Barbara Ann and Janet Amy.  He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Malcolm, Betty, Ivy Ellen Grace and Florence Elizabeth May.
