Malcolm's father was Allan Malcolm Howden and his mother is Florence Clara Emily Barnes.  His paternal grandparents were Frederick George Howden and Mary Eliza Flowers.  He is the youngest of four children.  He had three sisters named Florence Elizabeth May, Ivy Ellen Grace and Betty.  He has three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Ivan, Terence David, Allan Roy, Barbara Ann and Janet Amy.
