James was born on 28-Apr-1838.  James' father was John Howden and his mother was Mary Faulknor.  His paternal grandparents were James Howden and Elizabeth Morrison.  He was the nineth of eleven children.  He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Robert, William Douglass, Henry, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary, Emma Jane, Sarah and Eleanor.
