Emma Jane was born on 30-May-1852.  Emma Jane's father was John Howden and her mother was Mary Homer.  Her paternal grandparents were John Howden and Mary Faulknor; her maternal grandparents were  John Homer and  Ann Homer.  She was the oldest of five children.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Henry, John, Mary and Margaret .  She had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William, Robert Henry, Frederick George, Charles, Florence Adella and Eliza Eleanor.
